Abstract

This art-based dissertation includes a visual presentation that reflects a personal process of the production of art. Creating the production piece as a component of the research process was a way of exploring the relationship of creativity to spirituality. The depth psychological approach taken in this research relates to the proposed therapeutic process, which includes exploration of symbolic images that emerge during a creative process and the transformation and spiritual connection that occurs through expression of these images and integration of their symbolic meaning into consciousness. This dissertation is intended to illustrate how, through the use of the creative process, the connection between the conscious and unconscious spiritual realms of the individual psyche can be brought into awareness. The production piece confirms creativity as the process that allows the expression of the symbols of soul and spirit. Integration, awareness, and transformation can occur on the path of expression and experience. The inquiry addresses the question of how depth psychologys incorporation of art therapy might expand and deepen the therapeutic process and how one might engage the sacred through the practice of art and creativity. The dissertation culminates in a creative imaginal narrative that allows for the engagement of the mundus imaginalis.
